Established in 2012, Merrick Preparatory School (MPS) was is a private co-educational day and boarding high school offering grades 9 through 12 and University Qualification Year (UQY). MPS is located in Merrickville, Ontaria, which is acclaimed as Canada’s “Most Beautiful Village” by Communities in Bloom.

MPS focuses on whole student development to ensure their success. The school has created a failsafe system to ensure each student reaches beyond their grasp to achieve full potential. The unique Enhanced Academic Program has five main components integrated into students’ daily lives.

  • Daily Tutorial Support: Upon joining MPS, each student is placed in a grade specific Advisor Group with a Teacher Advisor who is a Guidance Specialist. To ensure consistency and support, each group consists 6-8 students who meet daily for one hour and stays as an intact group for the duration of their study at MPS. Advisors provide tutorial support, academic guidance and continuity for both student and parents in order to ensure consistent communication and each student’s specific needs are met

  • Advisor Program: Students meet in their Advisor Group one hour a week to learn a wide range topics relevant to today’s youth, ranging from financial literacy, banking and budgeting; to physical, mental and emotional health, to healthy relations; to diet, hygiene and nutrition; to organizational and time management skills; to effective study habits, stress management and life after MPS.

  • IELTS and Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) Preparation: The school offers three hours of IELTS preparation and one hour of OSSLT preparation a week for free. The purpose is to ensure students have competitive IELTS scores and the advantage required to gain entry into their first choice university, and also assist students to pass the OSSLT exam tested by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

  • University Guidance: All the teachers are trained and certified Guidance Specialists. Teacher Advisors become students’ University Guidance Counselor when they are in grade 12. Hence, the Guidance Counselors have a deep understanding of each student and are perfectly positioned to guide each student through the university application process. Students will meet with their Guidance Counselor for one hour a week to ensure the complete, full and timely applications including scholarship applications are made.

  • Student Success Program: The Headmaster and all teachers meet together each week to review and discuss each student’s progress and success, ensuring no students falls through the cracks. With the Daily Tutorial Support, Advisor Program, small class and school size, the support from Residential Life Staff after school and on weekends, and the Headmaster who lives on campus, any of the smallest concerns, academic or social, can be addressed immediately. The result is the students are successful on every front, learning the coping skills to address any issue they confront.

Apart from Grades 9-12, MPS also offers University Qualification Year (UQY) for students who have a high school diploma from their home country yet are looking to improve their English and academic standing to broaden their university opportunities. The UQY program provides students the

opportunity to earn the world-renowned Ontario Secondary School Diploma, ensuring post-secondary placement and enhanced scholarship opportunities by gaining a rich understanding of the North American pedagogical approach and curriculum, accessing to 3 hours of IELTS pre per week, and receiving one-on-one academic guidance.
