Education System in New Zealand

 

New Zealand’s education system is similar to UK. Duration of study in primary school, high school and university are 6 years, 7 years and 3 years respectively. Apart from the traditional study path, other accredited courses are also offered by government and private education institutions to cater for students.

 

English Language Centre

  • Courses are flexible and offered all year round from 1 week to 1 year duration

  • Courses include exam preparation, academic English, professional English and general English

 

High School

  • Most secondary schools are government-owned, however, some private and integrated schools are owned by church

  • Academic year runs from end of January or early February until mid-December

  • An academic year is divided into 4 terms with approximately 10 weeks in a term. Each term break is last for about 2 weeks except the summer break

  • Year 11 to 13 students are studying for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) which are divided into Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3

  • University entry is based on school-base assessment and public examination results in Year 13

 

Institute of Technology and Polytechnic

  • Institute of Technology and Polytechnic in New Zealand is run by government

  • Courses are practical and career oriented covering business, design, hospitality, information technology etc.

  • Students may apply for university studies with credit exemptions after completing courses in Institute of Technology and Polytechnic

  • 2 semesters in a year in February-June  and July-November

 

University Foundation Program

  • Tailor-made for international students aiming for undergraduate study in New Zealand universities but do not fulfil the entry requirement

  • Foundation program is mostly offered by private education institutions

  • Students can progress to the affiliated university after successfully completing the foundation studies with required marks

 

University

  • 8 universities in New Zealand are all government owned

  • Qualifications include Bachelor degree, Master degree, Doctoral degree, and Graduated certificate/diploma levels

  • Academic year starts from February to November in 2 semesters

  • Bachelor degree normally takes 3 years  to complete, however, some professional degrees may take 4 years or longer

  • System and style in NZ universities are similar to its counterparts in UK
