Education in Canada

Canada is recognized worldwide for the high academic standards, from elementary to university education. Each province and territory oversee its education systems and they recognizes the importance of maintaining high standards of education. The language of instruction is English, French or both, except in Quebec that French is its official language.

 

Elementary (Primary) School

  • Student ages at 4 or 5 will attend elementary or primary school for the first 8 grades of school

  • Public elementary schools are managed at the local level by elected school boards, which deliver a standard curriculum or program of study

  • Private schools charge fees and deliver the same curriculum as public schools in that province or territory

Secondary School

  • Also known as high school, run from grades 8,9,10 to 12 except Quebec that starts in grade 7 and ends in grade 12

  • Students completing high school at age 17 or 18 will move to college or university

  • Public high schools are managed at the local level by elected school boards, which deliver a standard curriculum or program of study

  • Private schools charge fees for attendance. The schools deliver the same curriculum as public schools to ensure students complete the same course of study as they would in the public school system. Private high schools include boarding schools, alternative schools, International Baccalaureate programs and specialized sports programs

Language School

  • Deliver different types of English and/or French language programs

  • Language schools that accredited by Languages Canada means the schools follow the international recognized qualify assurance standards

Colleges and Vocational School

  • Deliver career-oriented programs

  • The colleges and vocational schools work closely with business and industry to offer hands-on training programs and teach the skills employers are looking for

  • Qualifications includes certificate and diploma

  • Program length from a few months to 4 years

University

  • There are 100 public universities in Canada offering 15,000 programs to students

  • Canada is home to 10 of the top 250 universities in the world

  • Bachelor degree takes 4 years to complete

  • Master degree takes 1 to 2 years to complete

  • PhD or doctoral studies takes 3 to 5 years to complete
